Roy Williams spent most of his postgame press conference following No. 5 North Carolina’s convincing 96-71 home win over No. 11 Miami strongly reiterating his intentions to remain head coach in Chapel Hill after this season.
During the pregame show for Saturday’s dominating victory—which came on the heels of Wednesday’s heartbreaking defeat to No. 20 Duke—Doug Gottlieb of CBS Sports suggested this would be Williams’ final season at UNC and that he’d be replaced by Hubert Davis.
Williams didn’t take kindly to the speculation, per Andrew Carter of theNews & Observer:
Gottlieb later admitted his comments were merely speculation given Williams’ recent bout with vertigo, his elevating age—he’s now 65 years old—and the NCAA violations the school was charged with last summer in an academic probe:
Williams is in his 13th season at UNC and is overseeing one of his better teams—one that was ranked No. 1 in the preseason and is a solid choice to reach the Final Four.
Should he win his third national title this spring, riding off into the sunset a winner might seem to be a logical decision. But at the moment, Williams is clearly committed to remaining in his post.
